Dear Colleague:

We would like to bring the community up to date on the journal

Logical Methods in Computer Science
www.lmcs-online.org

We started this fully refereed, open access, free electronic journal in January 2005, intending to create a high-level platform for publications in all theoretical and practical areas in computer science involving logical methods, taken in a broad sense. We are now on Issue 3 of Volume 5 (there are four issues a year). So far, we have received more than 350 submissions of which we have published 162. In addition to individual submissions, our journal publishes special issues, e.g., of selected papers of high-level international conferences such as LICS, IJCAR, CAV, CSL, and RTA.

We are continuing actively to develop the journal. For example, we accept survey articles, and are developing `live’ surveys, which can be continually updated as knowledge progresses. In another direction, we are considering allowing authors to provide additional material of an expository nature, such as slides and videos, to enable them to interest a wider spectrum of readers in their contribution.

The journal is an overlay of CoRR, the computer science repository of arXiv. There are no fees for authors nor for readers. Every paper is refereed by two or more referees, and high standards are applied. The editorial board consists of about sixty top specialists in all areas of logic in computer science.

The journal is covered by Mathematical Reviews, the ISI Web of Knowledge, and the DBLP Database.

We welcome your comments and suggestions, and we seek your contributions! For more information please consult our web pages:

www.lmcs-online.org

Yours,

Managing Editors: Benjamin C. Pierce
Gordon D. Plotkin
Moshe Y. Vardi
Centre for Discrete Mathematics
and its Applications (DIMAP)
Department of Computer Science
(or Institute of Mathematics,
or Warwick Business School)
University of Warwick, UK
=====================

DIMAP is a multidisciplinary research centre supporting an
internationally competitive programme of research in discrete
modelling, algorithmic analysis, and combinatorial (discrete)
optimisation. It has been recently established by the University of
Warwick and is partially funded by the prestigious Engineering and
Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Science and Innovation
Award. The Centre builds on the expertise and the collaboration
between the theoretical computer science research groups (Algorithms
and Complexity, and Formal Methods) in the Department of Computer
Science, the Warwick Mathematics Institute, and the Operational
Research & Management Sciences group in the Warwick Business School.

The Centre has initial funding for about 13 PhD scholarships, and is
developing a doctoral training programme supporting a continuing
stream of research students in discrete mathematics, theoretical
computer science, and related areas. Available scholarships are for 3
years of PhD study.

Applicants should have a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or
Operational Research, with excellent grades and references.

DIMAP offers students grants of various types, covering tuition and/or
stipends. Tuition covers expenses for teaching and supervision, and
each student is equipped with office space, a computer, and a travel
budget to attend conferences.

For any further questions related to PhD scholarships in DIMAP, please
send an email to: dimap@dcs.warwick.ac.uk

Applications are welcome for the study starting in the academic year
2009/2010. Further information is available at:

For those previously use MS Windows, but have switched to Mac OS, they might face some problems of handling media files. For example, in a powerpoint slide, you embedded some .wmv video files, but they are not working in the Mac anymore. What could you do? At least, you could try to convert the .wmv files into .mov (Mac QuickTime file format) or .avi (Audio Video Interleave format). For this task, you could try this free software:

Available both in Mac and PC.

I’ve tried it and it is easy to use and free for certain period. But I have to warn you that this is not free or open-source software.

This is the place that I had my first fall over from my bike in Liverpool on last Monday. The road was icy due to the freezing weather. It was when I turning right, the bike suddenly lost control and crashed onto the road. Fortunately, there were no cars around and little damage was made to my bike and me.

There is one thing I like about freezing weather, the beautiful sky after the sunset. See these picture I took in the tallest building in Liverpool University around 5pm:

My friend had an HP printer and I asked whether I could use it, and he told me yes, but I had to bring a cable myself, because it did not come with a cable. I thought it might just be a casual mistake of HP. But it seems I was wrong, as when I get a new HP printer (£60) recently, I could not find a cable in the package as well. What a shame on HP. When I carefully read the item list included inside, it says “USB cable may not be included. If so, purchase seperately”. What a “smart” company!

Then I am curious about whether other people found similar problems. And with a simple google search, I found one here. There are a few similar complains in the follow-up comments of that post, and one person had to travel another 24 miles round trip to buy the cable.

The cable is actually quite cheap, for example here in Amazon UK, you could get it for less than £2. But this incident totally ruined my impression of HP. It shall not treat its customers like this, I believe. Will I chose an HP printer again? Not sure! but I will certainly give pripority to other more decent companies.

It is not a big deal, but I wrote this because you might want to know.
