Do we have human rights in China? Yes.
Do we have enough human rights in China? No.
That’s why we need to claim more. There are a few interesting things happened recently.
- The ’08 Charter is calling for constitutional reform in China.
- Liu Xiaobo, an author of the ’08 Charter has been detained.
- A lot of people have signed the ’08 Charter, including me (but I was not included in the first 303 persons who signed the document).
Is it dangerous to sign your real name in this document? I do not know, but supporting a good cause is what a good citizen should do. Now I am coming to the end of my PhD and start to look for a job. I find out that there are a lot less good research positions available for me in China than in a country like UK. Why? It is partly because the Chinese political system is so corrupted that even the academia in China is also very corrupted. But I believe in the future of China, and I will contribute to building a better research environment in China if possible. My family in China has been supported me pursuing my study all years along. That’s why I have a strong faith in Chinese people’s future. It will be of course difficult to make things better, but we will regret if we do not even try.
